Unlike Maria, who still worked, Ioana was a senior living off of her meagre pension. Mother had recently gotten on the phone with her to share her new realisation that serving others was a defining part of her personality, while also admitting that she had not been active in volunteer work in the last few years. Ioana was the one to propose that Mother take some action, and they both decided that volunteering at one of the orphanages in suburban Bucharest would be a valid and valuable use of their time.
